You will die eventually, no matter how powerful the enemy. There are many enemies on the screen, but those who live in a higher level will not be able to shoot. 

They will only start to attack you when they are on your level and have turned towards you. If you wish to live a bit longer, eliminate them as quickly as possible. As your character isn't immortal, the goal of this game isn't to survive. It is important to collect coins and beat your level progression longevity record in order unlock new characters. Which characteristics will the character have? He might have a larger life, or be able to shoot faster. It's just an image that appears on the screen.
